Since more than 50 years implants with electronic functions are used for various therapies. Design principles of current and future bio-electronic devices are discussed with respect to the requirements for stability of the functionality and the interfaces to neural tissue. Properties of bio-compatible materials used for bio-electronic devices are discussed with specific focus on liquid crystal polymers (LCP).  

Bio:
Dr. Eckardt Bihler graduated with a PhD in solid state physics from the University of Stuttgart in 1990. In his more than 25 years career in the microelectronics industry he collected considerable experience in ceramic and organic packaging, semiconductor design and printed circuit board processing technologies. Since five years he works for Dyconex AG, a speciality flex PCB shop in Switzerland, as a business development manager. His special interests are with LCP and its use for any kind of miniaturized medical electronic devices. He is the inventor of more than 10 patents in the field of bio-electronic devices.
