In my presentation, I will present new approaches to characterize the dynamics and diversity of mitochondria in the nervous system. While many functions have been ascribed to neural mitochondria, how these functions are executed in the in vivo context of vastly extended neuronal geometries remains unresolved. My lab uses in vivo imaging approaches, as well as systemic molecular exploration to understand better (1) how mitochondrial homeostasis is achieved under normal conditions, (2) how it breaks down in disease and (3) how the remarkable specificity of disease manifestations that general mitochondrial defects cause can be explained.
