While palladium-based catalysts are excellent for a range of carbon-carbon bond-forming catalytic reactions, their high cost, scarcity and toxicity mean that we need to replace them with catalysts based on more sustainable metals. The low cost, biocompatibility and accessibility of iron make it an ideal candidate. This talk will outline our recent work on developing cross-coupling catalysts based on iron and the efforts undertaken to try and establish the mechanisms of catalysis.
