Offering life-saving technology to vulnerable people through a profitable business model
As part of the EPFL SHS course “Technology and social entrepreneurship”, the College of Humanities is happy to welcome Mr Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen who will present how his company offers life-saving technology to the most vulnerable people while operating as a profitable business. You will learn about the numerous opportunities that exist for social entrepreneurs for “doing good as good business” in humanitarian and development work.
Mikkel Vestergaard Frandsen is the CEO and owner of Vestergaard, a global company he has structured around a humanitarian entrepreneurship business model. Vestergaard, headquartered in Lausanne, is dedicated to improving the health of disadvantaged people with game-changing solutions that fight waterborne diseases, malaria, HIV/AIDS, and neglected tropical diseases. The company is the largest producer of long-lasting insecticidal bed nets that prevent malaria, and its award-winning LifeStraw® water filters have been designed for individual, family and community uses.
For his significant contributions to developing countries, Mikkel has been honored by the Economist with the Social and Economic Innovation Award and named by Success magazine as one of “9 Visionaries Shaping the Future.” The Luhya tribe of western Kenya made Mikkel an elder, a rare, important honor for foreigners who have touched the lives of Kenyans in an extraordinary manner.
