COUNTER-PROJECTS / COUNTER-SPACES Urban & Environmental Theory Session #5 / MAS Urban and Territorial Design ETHZ/EPFL
AGROECOLOGICAL URBANISM
Agroecological Urbanism foregrounds an innovative and radical perspective on food planning, positioning food as a central element in reshaping urbanism to promote more just social arrangements and ecological practices.
Building on state-of-the-art and participatory research on farming, urbanism, food policy and advocacy in the field of food system transformation, Michiel Dehaene and Chiara Tornaghi change the way food planning has been conceptualised to date. They argue for moving from a ‘food-in-the-city’ approach to an ‘urbanism’ perspective, unpacking the economic and spatial processes driving urbanization, and proposing strategies to transform these processes into more equitable and just ones.
Organized in the framework of the MAS in Urban and Territorial Design, the Urban and Environmental Theory Sessions see guests address the theme of the semester: “Counter-projects / Counter-spaces”. The sessions, offering a combination of theoretical positions and professional design experience, address the challenges of spatial, social, and energy transition through various contributions: from human geography, urban studies, spatial design, environmental studies, and system thinking.
