The notion of Cyber Physical Systems, as well as related topics like Internet of Things, is currently attracting quite a lot of attention also in manufacturing and process industries. As a major supplier of automation systems to these industries, ABB are naturally involved in developing CPS concepts. For example, in Germany there is a large national initiative called Industry 4.0, thus implying that CPS would be the 4th industrial revolution.
Clearly CPS offers many potential applications for automation, ranging from engineering to production management and maintenance. This talk will give examples of such applications, but also discuss whether it is really a revolution instead of evolution.
