The emergence of 3D additive manufacturing technologies has enabled the fabrication of meta-materials with micro-architectures designed, for instance, for achieving specific optical or mechanical properties. In our work, we have designed and fabricated high-strength nano-lattice structures by applying 3D direct laser writing. The structures consist of polymeric trusses with typical diameters in the range of 1 µm [1]. In order to enhance the strength of these structures, different strategies have been employed: (i) coating with ceramic films by atomic layer deposition with thicknesses between 10 and 100 nm; (ii) baking of the polymers by moderate thermal treatments; and pyrolysis by a high-temperature treatment. For the latter, it is found that the pyrolysis leads to the formation of glassy carbon structures with exceptional properties [2]. With respect to the mechanical behavior of these truss structures, it will be shown that the specific strength, i.e. the ratio of strength to density, exceeds those of all natural and man-made cellular solids. KIT is a University and National Laboratory with a staff of more than 9000 people. His research interests have a focus on studying deformation and degradation mechanisms in nanomaterials for a wide range of applications from MEMS and microelectronics to energy conversion and storage. Oliver Kraft graduated from the University of Stuttgart in 1995 in materials science. From 1996 to 1997, he was a post-doc in Prof. W.D. Nix’s research group in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Stanford University. Oliver Kraft also worked as a research scientist at the Max-Planck-Institut für Metallforschung in Stuttgart from 1997 to 2002. From 2011 to 2015, he was speaker of the Helmholtz-Program Science and Technology of Nanosystems, as part of the German national lab system, the program funds and coordinates efforts in nanotechnology at KIT. For the Materials Research Society, he has been a member of the Board of Directors since 2011 and has served in 2015 as President of the society.
