Thalidomide became infamous in the 60’s for its teratogenic effects but since then it and derivatives have been rediscovered as potent drugs against myeloma. These molecules act as catalysts by orchestrating the degradation of proteins important for the cancer. In a sense they offer a chemical approach to accomplish the same ends as siRNA or CRISPR/Cas9. In this talk I will discuss the how protein-degrading small molecule catalysts work and describe efforts in our lab to build a new series of such catalysts.
