The information technology industry owes its success in large part to the ability of scientists and engineers to make the physical manifestation of information, the devices and “bits”, ever smaller. We are approaching some real physical limits, though, and further miniaturization of conventional transistors will no longer be possible. New device concepts, some quite radical, are emerging. Performance gains are also being achieved by means other than improvement of the logical switching elements, for example in system architecture and in data transmission, where miniaturization and integration is occurring at an even greater pace. While we have developed tools to manipulate and characterize materials down to atomic dimensions, economical manufacturing at the nanometer scale still represents a significant challenge. Here too new approaches are being sought. In this talk, some examples of the further evolution of information technology hardware will be discussed as well the revolutionary changes to be addressed in the future.
