After motivating the interest in the double centralizers of unipotent elements we give a description of the methods used in determining these objects. The analysis is different depending on whether the characteristic is good or bad. We show how it is different and give a characteristic independent description of these double centralizers which allows to computationally obtain these objects if both the characteristic and the rank are small enough.
