Note:
  • Pre-proposals will be accepted starting from 15 days prior to the deadline date and up to close of business on the deadline date (17:00 ET).
  • Pre-Proposals must be received during this window to be considered.
  • Pre-proposal must be submitted online (using a pre-proposal template) in the first instance.
  • Successful pre-proposals will be invited to submit a full proposal for consideration.
Aim:
The Environmental Research and Education Foundation (EREF) is a non-profit organisation based in the United States. EREF funds and directs scientific research and educational initiatives for waste management practices to benefit industry participants and the communities they serve.
Research topics must relate to sustainable solid waste management practices and pertain to the following topic areas:
  • Climate change impacts on and from solid waste management.
  • Quantifying the circularity of materials.
  • Quantifying the environmental burden of plastic wastes.
  • Environmental justice relating to solid waste.
  • Waste minimisation.
  • Recycling.
  • Waste conversion to energy, biofuels, chemicals or other useful products. This includes, but is not limited to, the following technologies:
    • Waste-to-energy.
    • Anaerobic digestion.
    • Composting.
    • Other thermal or biological conversion technologies.
  • Strategies to promote diversion to higher and better uses (eg organics diversion, market analysis, optimised material management, logistics etc).
  • Landfilling.
Desirable aspects of the above topics, in addition to or as part of hypothesis driven applied research, also include:
  • Economic or cost/benefit analyses.
  • Feasibility studies for untested technologies or management strategies.
  • Life cycle analysis or inventory.
  • Analyses of policies relating to the above.
Funding levels vary and grants can be held in any country.

Eligibility Criteria
  • Academic and non-academic institutions (provided the Principal Investigators (PIs) are qualified to conduct the research)
  • No restrictions on geographic location (any US or non-US institutions are eligible to apply).
  • Submissions may include multiple institutions
Pre-proposal submissions
  • Limited to two submissions per PI during a particular submission period.
  • PI cannot be listed as a PI or Co-PI on other submissions for that particular round, but may be listed as a supporting investigator on other submissions.
