The fact is that sometimes the most nebulous forms can carry the greatest significance, and that intersections are at once chaotic and ordained.

Holding signifies an interim occupation. It suggests that which is potential, a parenthesis of possibility — to be put “on hold”, to land on a ‘holding page’, perhaps to have ‘holdings’ in terms of assets, to be liquefied on command. Yet to be held is the thing we want most: in safety, out of harm's way — even to be held in high regard. In this conversation — invoking whisper networks, itinerant initiatives and unaffiliated alliances — we will talk about holding space as an emergent practice, in the gaps left by institutions and their metrics of value.

The South X Initiative is a new platform at EPFL dedicated to bringing together voices from across the “Global South” to collectively think about our built environment. Here, “South” refers to geographies, material practices, climates, ecologies, and cultures that have navigated socio-political and ecological change, and in doing so, have produced distinct spatial forms and cultural traditions. Through semester-themed guest lectures, reading discussions, and workshops, the initiative offers a platform for exploring alternative methods, processes, and narratives of spatial praxes.  e initiative offers a platform for exploring alternative methods, processes, and narratives of spatial praxes.
