At the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud of INFN, a microwave interferometer for plasma density measurements in Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR) Ion Sources has been developed. In such compact ion sources, like the ECR, the wavelength of the probing electromagnetic radiation used for the interferometry is comparable to the size of the plasma chamber, then, both the experimental setup and the measurement technique, have been developed in order to avoid the generation of "multipaths", due to the modal beahaviour of microwaves. In this seminar the measurement technique and the preliminary results of the experimental characterization of the microwave interferometer will be presented.
