The present-day magnetic recording technology, which is the foundation of data centers, is predicted to be able to sustain the wildly growing worldwide demand of cloud storage only for the coming 10-15 years. This fact has motivated the exploration of alternative approaches to develop a faster, more energy efficient and scalable magnetic recording. A promising strategy relies on femtosecond laser pulses as tool to write and read magnetic bits of information. The duration of such stimulus is comparable or even shorter than the characteristic time-scales of the vibrational, magnetic and electronic fundamental excitations in solid. Therefore non-equilibrium routes towards the control of the magnetic order in solids can be explored. In my talk I will discuss a few major results concerning the generation, manipulation and detection of magnetic excitations[1-3], tackling also the barely-addressed issue of the coupling f the spin and charge dynamics on the ultrafast time-scale.
