In the 1980s, L. Hethelyi introduced the notion of a soft subgroup in a finite p-group and carried on an in-depth study of such groups. Roughly speaking, a p-group having soft subgroups can be seen as an extrapolation of a p-group of maximal nilpotency class (and these have soft subgroups indeed). In this talk, we will review Hethelyi's work and present some examples.
