The simulation of the motion of interacting particles is a deceivingly simple, yet powerful and natural, method for exploring diverse transport processes ranging from nanofluidic devices, to cell migration and jellyfish swimming. This flexibility has been traditionally associated with reduced numerical accuracy and poor computational efficiency. Efforts to address these problems will be presented, as wells as an introduction to novel wavelet adapted particle methods, algorithms for coupling of atomistic and continuum descriptions and the implementation of particle methods in massively parallel computer architectures.
