The subgrid scale stress and the subgrid scale fluxes are fundamental to the Large Eddy Simulation of turbulent flows. In order to better understand their basic properties a lot of different studies have been performed and different approaches have been applied. The physical and the mathematical architecture of these terms have been analyzed in detail, and recently many experimental data have been collected both in the laboratory and with field experiments. In the seminar we will discuss some simple formal properties of the SGS quantities based on the operational LES, the classical formulation of the Large Eddy Simulation of turbulent flows based on filtering operators. We will see that these simple algebraic properties can be useful to the analysis of the data and to the study and the improvement of the subgrid models actually in use.
