Abstract :
The unprecedented rise of mobile, internet-enabled devices across the globe has created a new field of "digital epidemiology”. From small-scale studies of high-resolution contact networks to large-scale digital disease detection systems, we are witnessing a revolution in data availability and access that is continuing to affect every single aspect of human health. I will present some of my ongoing projects involving wireless sensors, social media data, and image data that reflect both the opportunities and the technical, social and organizational challenges around this rapidly evolving field.

Bio :
Marcel Salathé is an Associate Professor at EPFL in Lausanne and Geneva, at both the School of Life Sciences, and the School of Computer and Communication Sciences. He is originally from Basel, where he got his Masters in Biology. He then went to ETH to obtain a PhD in Theoretical Biology. After that, he received a Branco Weiss Fellowship and went to Stanford as a postdoc. In 2010, he became an Assistant Professor at Penn State at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics. He spent 2014 in the Bay area, first at Y Combinator, then as a visiting Assistant Professor at Stanford.

Marcel's main motivation is to take advantage of the digital and mobile revolution to do better epidemiology, and ultimately to help ensure that everyone in the world can enjoy the same levels of health.
