Abstract : "Chromosomes, these structures formerly considered as nearly intangible, are in reality subject to permanent rearrangements, the molecule of heredity is sewed together, modified, cut, lengthened, shortened, reversed", François Jacob used to say. These rearrangements are involved in cancer development, origin of new species, sex chromosomes differentiation, and can provide phylogenetic informations. I will present recent progresses in the design of good models of structural evolution of genomes, and the computational problems they raise. Biography : Eric Tannier is a researcher at the INRIA in France. He obtained a Ph-D in discrete mathematics at the University of Grenoble in 2002, and now works in the Biometry and Evolutionary Biology Lab of the University of Lyon. He's doing computational biology and comparative genomics, building methods to understand the evolution of genomes, their content, organization and functionning.
