Abstract
The enormous impact of the COVID pandemic, together with other diseases or chronic health risks has significantly prompted the development and application of biosensors and bioelectronics for real-time monitoring and diagnosing health status. However, conventional biomedical devices, especially implantable devices, still suffer from low biocompatibility and high invasiveness. Developing new tools and technologies that push the limits of spatial and temporal resolution, enhance functionality and sustainability, and reduce invasiveness to the human body could produce breakthroughs in fundamental science and lead to revolutionary technologies for biomedicine and healthcare. In this talk, Dr Zhao will present their recent progress in the development of flexible implantable and wearable electronics for the human-machine interface, including ultrafexiable microporous mesh electronics and integrated testing platforms for cellular interrogation and tissue deterministic regeneration, nanotransistor integrated mesh sensor systems for multifunctional sensing, and ultrasmall nanowire transistor probes for intracellular electrophysiology recording. To realize the sustained operation of bioelectronics, flexible power units with photo- or wireless-charging capabilities will also be discussed.

Short biography
Dr Yunlong Zhao is an Associate Professor at the Dyson School of Design Engineering, Imperial College London, leading the Electrochemical and Bioelectronic Interface Group. He also holds a joint appointment at the National Physical Laboratory (UK) as a Senior Scientist. Yunlong carried out his postdoctoral and doctoral research at Harvard University, where he conducted research in bioelectronic devices and nano-bio interfaces. He also received his undergraduate and postgraduate research training at the Wuhan University of Technology, with a focus on electrochemical energy storage and electrochemical probing. He has developed a series of novel energy storage devices, sensors, bioelectronics, and their integration into 2D on-chip and 3D soft systems for the in-depth studies of electrochemical energy storage and electrophysiology, with over 100 publications published in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Materials, etc. with a total citation over 11K. His current research interests include (1) Lab-on-a-chip and implantable devices for electrochemical and physiological interrogation, (2) Advanced electrochemical energy storage technologies for Sustainability and Net Zero, (3) Wearable and implantable bioelectronics for Healthcare and the Human-Machine Interface, and (4) Micro-power sources and bioelectronics integrated 3D soft system.
