Abstract
Prevention of lifestyle-related diseases is more effective, far less costly and immensely more contributing to quality of life than having to manage chronic disease. OnePlanet Research Center conducts groundbreaking research towards health predictions and to provide partners swith these insights and technologies. Such personalized tools and applications could provide individuals detailed insights into their mental and physical health, but also personalized advice that would prevent lifestyle-related diseases and improve quality of life for people with a disease.

Swallowable sensors for continuous, detailed and non-invasive assessment of factors such as inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract, fiber intake, protein digestion and microbiota composition will be one of the outcomes of Ingestibles. Our smart bathroom for health focuses on measuring inflammation biomarkers in urine and feces, whereas CHILL + wearable investigates how to present a picture of how one’s behavior affects one’s mental wellbeing and stress levels. All of these projects will converge in the Human Digital Twin: an AI-guided, digital copy of a human being, controlled by that individual, which details timely and appropriate interventions and their potential health benefits.

In this partnership, the innovative power of three organizations is leveraged: imec (chip and digital technologie), Wageningen University & Research (agriculture, food, nutrition and health) and Radboud University and Radboud university medical center (healthcare). Extensive field & clinical studies ensure that what is developed can make a difference in real life.

Bio
Chris Van Hoof is General Manager of the OnePlanet Research Center in Gelderland. He is also Vice President R&D at imec. Chris believes preventive health, personalised nutrition, sustainable food production and reduced waste are essential enablers of improving our world for the generations to come. And he is convinced that technology (hardware and AI) are key tools to make that happen. After receiving a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Leuven in 1992, Chris has held positions as manager and director at imec in highly diverse fields spanning technology, circuits, systems, data and applications. Apart from delivering industry-relevant innovative solutions to customers, his work also resulted in five startups (four in the healthcare domain). He is also full professor at the University of Leuven and imec Fellow. Although OnePlanet Research Center started just over 3 years ago, it has already built up a team of 100 scientists and engineers, who create innovations in close collaboration with teams from the founding organizations imec, Radboud University and Medical Center and Wageningen University and Research.
