The talk will give an overview of nonaqueous synthesis routes to different types of inorganic materials .  It will be shown how the use of microwave irradiation greatly accelerates these processes, offering an efficient tool to prepare powders, nanoparticulate films and doped materials within just a few minutes.  The particles can be used as building blocks for preparing multicomponent aerogels and metal foams.  Potential applications of these materials lie in the field of lithium ion batteries, gas sensors, photocatalysts and transparent conducting oxides.
