Learning from data (also referred to as machine learning or computational learning) has become one of the most influential fields in engineering and science. It has had a decisive impact on a number of applications including search engines, financial forecasting, recommendation systems, and medical image recognition, among others. The field addresses a fundamental question that arises in many research projects and practical applications, which is how to uncover the underlying process given a set of observations. There are strong theoretical underpinnings to when learning from data is feasible, and a wide range of algorithms and techniques that make it possible. In this talk, I will review the theory, algorithms, and applications of learning from data, highlighting the important concepts and techniques. The goal is to enable research workers to identify areas within their research that can benefit from learning from data.
