The widely discussed luminous efficiency of lamp sources is just one aspect of sustainability in electrical lighting. With the increasing power of LEDs, new issues like glare control play an important role for acceptance. Further, thermal management is a crucial aspect to transfer LED performance from the lab into real architecture. How will LED lighting change the design of luminaires and the appearance of architecture? The lecture by the German architect Thomas Schielke will illuminate the strategies of LED and luminaire manufacturers and relate them to the functional and design requirements in architecture. An additional glance into building history reveals which issues of sustainable lighting were discussed earlier and further, how LEDs could enhance efficient lighting. The perspective of perception-orientated lighting design will help to link technological progress with functional and psychological needs.
