Season 2
Alexandre Colin, Characterisation of the neutron activation of the EPFL CROCUS reactor’s structures
The Swiss National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) is developing an activation calculation sequence for the neutron-activated components that must be handled when a nuclear power plant is being decommissioned. To validate the code, measurements are performed on elements of the CROCUS reactor. Gamma spectrometry measurements are at first carried out on the concrete of the experimental cavity, but the lack of knowledge on the geometric efficiency prevents the proper determination of the activity. To calculate the geometry efficiency for different shapes and setups, a model of the experimental setup is developed on SERPENT. The activity can then be calculated for the concrete of the CROCUS cavity as well as the activated elements found in the reactor core such as the guide tubes of the cadmium plates.
