Abstract: The buckling of spherical shells is heavily dependent on geometrical defects. A slight perturbation in the geometry lowers the load that a structure can hold considerably. This is important knowledge for safely constructing buildings. However, current defect sensitivity is only understood under loading under external pressure, not under gravity. In my last 6 months I investigated this previously experimentally unattainable loading for shell buckling. Is the behavior the same as external pressure or do we need to rewrite the theories?
Biography: Jeroen Kodde is a master student in Fluids, Bio and Soft Matter at the Eindhoven University of Technology, where he focusses on statistical physics of soft matter systems. Currently, he does an internship in the fleXLab under the supervision of Pedro Reis and Uba Ubamanya on shell buckling under body forces.
