Abstract The shedding of vortices in the wake of cylindrical structures leads to structural vibrations, significant increases in drag forces, and aeroacoustic noise issues.
Introducing span-wise geometric disturbances to the nominally two-dimensional base form of a uniform cylinder is an effective method to control vortex shedding. We focus on the vortex shedding patterns in the wake of these span-wise varied cylinders, especially the dislocation phenomenon at the interfaces of vortices from different span-wise cells. The automatic identification and extraction of dislocation occurrences are achieved by several novel approaches based on flow visualizations. We classify the extracted dislocations into different modes. The effects of different modes on vortex shedding patterns are further analyzed based on the proper orthogonal decomposition method and two-dimensional Fast Fourier Transform analysis. The research holds significant promise for advancing our understanding of vortex dislocations and enabling effective control strategies in potential engineering applications.

Bio Yefei Yang is a visiting PhD student in the Unsteady Flow Diagnostics Laboratory (UNFoLD) at EPFL, since March 2023. His research focuses on the wake dynamics of flow past cylindrical structures. Yefei Yang obtained his master diploma in civil engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in China and continued his PhD studies there.
