Category Call for proposal

MeteoSwiss issues a call for proposals in the framework of GCOS Switzerland. The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) is a joint initiative of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO, the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) and the International Council for Science (ISC). The overall goal of GCOS is to ensure the sustained provision of reliable physical, chemical and biological observations and data records for the climate system as a whole – across the atmospheric, oceanic and terrestrial domains, including hydrological and carbon cycles and the cryosphere.

This call for proposals focuses on 2 different pillars of the GCOS Switzerland Strategy 2017-2026:

  1. Pillar 1: “Enhance and strengthen the Swiss climate observing system
  2. Pillar 2 : “Promote collaboration nationally, regionally and globally

MeteoSwiss herewith calls for proposals that address Pillar 1 and/or Pillar 2. Proposals that address other pillars will also be considered as long as the benefit for the GCOS Switzerland Strategy and the GCOS Implementation Plan are clearly apparent.

Who can apply:
  • The call for proposals is open to individuals affiliated to a Swiss institution in Switzerland. It primarily addresses individuals that can demonstrate extensive experience in climate system monitoring and research in Switzerland.
  • Each applicant (=individual) can submit only one proposal per call as PI.
  • Proposals can be submitted in a consortium. Each consortium shall designate one principal investigator (PI) and a deputy PI.
  • If a consortium includes foreign institutions, it is imperative that the PI is based at a Swiss institution in Switzerland.

Funding: For this call for proposals, a total indicative budget of 695’180 CHF is available. It is anticipated that 3-5 projects will be supported through this call. A significant in-kind contribution is required.

Duration: max. 4 years.

Deadline for proposals: 1 February 2021 at 16:00 CET
