"Being There: Domain Contrast and the Impact of Technological Innovations"
Abstract:
We build on recent research on category contrast to gain new insights on the impact of technological innovations. Extant research in the innovation literature has illustrated the role of individual properties of innovations and contextual conditions in explaining variations of impact. The spillovers obtained from innovations by belonging to socially visible and coherent technology domains have been less investigated so far. Analyzing forward citation patterns of more than two millions patents, we qualify extant research in three ways: first, we show that a technological domain's contrast increases the average impact of the innovations belonging to it; second, the beneficial effect of contrast stems from an increased social visibility of innovations, net of variations in quality; third, this trend of results is particularly strong among younger innovations. The paper further elaborates on the theoretical link between the sociological literature on categories and innovation research.
