"Endogenous Resource Revaluation and the Competitive Dynamics of Openness"

Abstract
While firm competitive advantage is normally couched in terms of control, an increasing body of research demonstrates how firms use selective openness to achieve strategic goals. Such openness corresponds to recent extensions of the resource-based view, including the dynamic, firm-specific and cognitive approaches to resource valuation. We apply the RBV to develop a three-phase model of the openness process, linking the endogenous decision of a firm to reduce the value of a once-valuable resource leads to its resource reconfiguration and then a revised basis of competition. This model offer implications for research on firm-specific resource valuation, the role of dynamic capabilities in resource reconfiguration, and understanding the long-term impacts of firm openness.
