Nonlinear ideal MHD simulations for the gravitational instability in a plasma slab will be reported, which show four phases: an initial transient, a linear phase, a "quasi-linear" phase and an eruption. We compare simulations close to linear marginal stability with those deeper into the unstable region and find differences in the quasi-linear phase, where a reduction in the instantaneous growth rate is found compared to the linear regime, prior to the subsequent eruption. Hints of a subcritical instability driven by nonlinear effects are found in this quasi-linear phase, which suggest a new predictive model for ELM size.
Preliminary results for the new model, which retains full tokamak geometry, will be presented.
