Novel fabrication approaches and designs for large area, flexible photonic devices
Imparting unconventional, large area or flexible substrates with complex photonic functionalities using simple and scalable fabrication approaches remains a significant challenge in materials science and engineering. However, the search for innovative solutions in terms of materials processing and device architecture can lead to important contributions in fundamental science, as well as to novel technological solutions in a variety of fields such as distributed sensing and monitoring, energy harvesting, saving and storage, advanced health care systems, or functional fabrics. In this talk, I will present the research efforts at the Laboratory of Photonic Materials and Fibre Devices to develop innovative fabrication approaches for the development of micro and nanostructured photonic devices that can be deployed over large surfaces or within flexible one dimensional substrates. In particular, I will introduce the emerging field of multimaterial fibres and discuss their fabrication approaches, as well as potential functionalities, applications, and future developments.
