It is only since recently that the choice of the control cost functional in optimal control problems related to partial differential equations is receiving special attention. It has been recognized that the use of non-smooth functionals is of particular interest. L1 - and measure valued controls lead the sparsity properties of the optimal controls. This can be used to design "cheap" controls, or to solve optimal actuator or inverse source problems. Non-smooth costs are also efficient to address multi-bang control and switching control problems.
To cope with the resulting numerical challenges we propose the use of semi-smooth Newton methods. Applications to optimal control for the wave equation and to quantum control problems will be presented.
