Speaker Prof. Olalla Vázquez
Category Conferences - Seminars
Olalla Vázquez, tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Philipps-Universität Marburg (Germany), strives to understand and manipulate biological processes at the molecular level. She will give an NCCR online talk entitled “Optochemical tools for biological applications” on January 19, 2021.

About the talk
In her group, Olalla Vázquez strives to understand and manipulate biological processes at the molecular level. For this purpose, she designs innovative chemical tools capable of sensing biological processes, and remotely controlling the molecular machines inside cells. Her work embraces the synthesis of low molecular weight drug-like molecules, peptides, and nucleic acid-like compounds, together with biological assays to investigate disease-related processes. She aims at overcoming the current limitations (adaptability, stability, uptake, etc.) in the field to reach on-demand regulation. Such chemical tools provide complementary strategies to the biochemical ones as well as the basis for the discovery of novel therapies. Her research program takes full advantage of photosensitive molecules, in particular focused on: fluorophores, photosensitizers and photoswitches.

About the speaker
Olalla Vázquez graduated in Chemistry from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in 2004 (with honours). She obtained her PhD under the supervision of Prof. Mascareñas and Prof. Vázquez, working on synthetic transcription factors and fluorescent DNA binders (2010). As FPU fellow, Olalla was a visiting PhD student at Harvard University in the group of Prof. Verdine (2006), and at Humboldt Universität in Berlin with Prof. Seitz (2008). In 2011 she received the Marie Curie postdoctoral research fellowship and returned to the group of Prof. Seitz to explore RNA template-directed reactions in the context of cancer therapy. In summer 2014, Olalla was appointed to a tenure-track Assistant Professorship at Philipps-Universität Marburg, where she was entrusted with the mission of managing the newborn division of Chemical Biology together with Prof. Eric Meggers.
During her career path, Olalla has received national and international awards, including the Research Lilly Award for PhD students (2009), Silver Medal at the European Young Chemist Award (EYCA 2012), Fulbright-Cottrell Award (2016), MarBiNa Förderpreis (2018), RSEQ Best European Young Researcher in Chemical Biology (2020)
