Peroxisomes grease the wheel of the immune system

Dr. Di Cara’s research program aims to define the mechanisms by which  peroxisomes, important metabolic organelles, orchestrate the innate immune responses.  Her group heavily relies on the use of the Drosophila model system  to explore the tissue-specific peroxisome contributions to immunity.  Her work identified a novel and previously unexplored player in innate immunity.  Defining the roles of peroxisomes in regulating immune processes has implications for our understanding of peroxisome metabolic signaling in inflammation, immunodeficiency, cancer and diabetes and opens a new unexplored field of the innate immunity.
