Global consumption of energy, water and fuel has been increasing rapidly. The supply cannot always be increased fast enough to meet demand, and some resources such as fuels are non-renewable. An alternative solution is to decrease demand, which requires persuading consumers to change their consumption behaviour. In this talk, I will discuss two of my on-going research projects, Wattalyst and YouGrid. In Wattalyst, we designed and developed Energy Efficiency Persuasive Interfaces for residential consumers, to be deployed in Chennai and Sweden. The interface provides appliance level consumption visualization, social comparative analysis, and incentives driven DR (Demand Response) signals to reduce electricity demand. For YouGrid, we designed and developed a collaborative interactive scheduler allowing community users to schedule their appliance usage in advance, resulting in improved fuel conversion efficiency of the diesel generators through optimal loading. Moreover, the interface provides different visualization to understand consumption of diesel generator, and other primary and secondary loads.
