2008, the American Physical Society launched a web-only publication called Physics (physics.aps.org). In each weekly issue of Physics, we publish expert commentaries and staff-written summaries on several papers published in Physical Review and Physical Review Letters that we feel should be brought to the attention of the physics community. These papers are selected based on comments in referee reports, the advice of established experts and discussion among the editors. Both the commentaries and the papers highlighted in Physics are completely free for downloading.
While a successful project in and of itself – Physics has brought together the community and is attracting attention to the excellent research that Physical Review and Physical Review Letters publish each week – it also mirrors changes that are taking place at the APS. Our journals do not exist in a vacuum – there are many choices for authors that seek rapid publication or high prestige. With this in mind, I will highlight the many ways in which Physical Review continues to be a favorable journal in which to publish the best of physics research.
The Physical Review journals are society journals, published for physicists and not for profit, and they should reflect the perspective of the community. I therefore hope this talk will serve as a springboard from which the audience can ask questions and share opinions.
