Speaker Prof. Marta Molinas, Norwegian University of Science and Technology
Bio: Marta Molinas received the Doctor of Engineering Degree from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, in 2000. In 1998 she stayed at the University of Padova, Italy as a guest researcher. From 2004 to 2007 she was a Post-Doctoral researcher at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Trondheim, Norway. Since 2008 she is Professor at NTNU in Power Electronics for Power Systems. From 2008-2009 she was a JSPS (Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) Research Fellow at the Energy Technology Research Institute of The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), in Tsukuba, Japan. She is currently on her sabbatical year at Columbia University’s Earth Institute and the Kingdom of Bhutan collaborating within the Millennium Village Project with power electronics in Microgrids. Her research interest is in power electronics applications in power systems, renewable energy sources with focus on wind/wave energy conversion systems and the stability of power electronics systems. She is Associate Editor of the IEEE Trans. of Power Electronics and Editorial Board member of Elsevier Journal Electric Power Systems Research.

A forthcoming situation requiring new ways of thinking

The talk will cover aspects of the new dimension that the pervasive use of power electronics is introducing in modern power systems, pointing at new avenues for research by identifying the challenges and opportunities posed by the new scenario.

The use of power electronics in power systems has for long time been increasing due to the widespread application of electric drives and switch mode power supplies. More recently, this presence of power electronics has been experiencing a boost with the integration of renewable energy sources due to the basic incompatibility of these sources with the grid requirements. Power electronics enables in that case a very effective and flexible coupling with the system offering high controllability and buffering capabilities. The range of applications has however been moving beyond the domains of generation and traditional loads, migrating into compensation devices (FACTS), actively controlled loads, harmonic filters, DC circuit breakers, electronic transformer, HVDC, energy storage and transportation in the form of moving loads in the system.
When this pervading presence of power electronics combines with other features such as nonlinear time-varying loads and equipment in modern power system, the new properties introduced by the cybernetic nature of power electronics are defining the overall behavior of the system, making it an increasingly complex issue. The presentation will give a highlight of the research findings in some of the above areas of application of power electronics concluding with the identification of new avenues of research triggered by the many challenges of the new scenario.
