A deeper understanding of the gyrotron physics and technology is necessary for the design and manufacturing of robust and reliable gyrotrons with higher power and efficiency required for the future fusion experimental reactors. In this context, several key issues of the gyrotron operation have been recently investigated, such as the influence of the emitter ring manufacturing tolerances, the electron trapping mechanisms in the region of the electron gun, the beam neutralization effect, the influence of the position of the collector decelerating region on the overall gyrotron efficiency, etc. The main results of these studies will be presented while several ideas will be discussed for the gyrotron design optimization. Finally, novel ideas for the design of a very efficient collector system will be presented for the boosting of the overall efficiency of the future gyrotrons to very high levels.
