Nitrogen is an important nutrient and signal for plant growth and development. However, to date, our knowledge of how plants sense and transduce the nitrogen signals is very limited. To better understand the molecular mechanisms of plant nitrogen responses, both gel- and mass spectrometry- based proteomic approaches were used to profile the proteins with abundance and phosphorylation state changes during nitrate deprivation and recovery in Arabidopsis thaliana. Many biological pathways such as Ca2+ signaling, phytohormone signaling, and processes of gene expression were found to be under tight regulation by phosphorylation in response to nitrate stimulation. Taken together, our work provided new insights into plant nutrient response and signaling.
