The Bloch conjecture on 0-cycles on surfaces
predicts that a complex projective surface
with no nonzero holomorphic forms has trivial
CH_0 group. A more general statement concerns
the action of correspondences on Chow groups of zero cycles.
I will describe what is known on this conjecture,
and a method which I developed recently
and applies in a reasonably general setting.
