One goal of modern homotopy theory is to import the techniques of algebra and algebraic geometry to homotopy theory. With the construction of good models of the category of spectra, many have imported familiar constructions in algebra to homotopy theory. After recalling the definition of commutative ring spectra and power operations we will present some computations of the relative smash products, the analogue of tensor products. We will then apply some of these computations to obtain non-realizability results as well as interpret these structures. These results naturally lead to the question "Why are relative smash products detecting this structure?" We then answer this question with the construction of a category of representations of a "fundamental group" object that is built from relative smash products.
