The (generalized) Rost motives play an important role in the proofs of the celebrated conjectures relating the Galois cohomology and the Milnor K-theory (the Milnor and the Bloch-Kato conjectures). It turns out that in small dimensions they can be constructed in a rather elementary way. Moreover, the Rost motives in small dimensions are closely related to such classical structures in Algebra as the Pfister forms, octonions, and exceptional Jordan algebras. Besides from this, they have an amazing relation to the classifying spaces of some algebraic groups.
In the talk I am going to give a short introduction to the category of Grothendieck's Chow motives and explain the concept of the Rost motives.
