The Swiss Academy of Medical Sciences (SAMS) and the SNSF, with the support of private foundations and in collaboration with the Swiss School of Public Health, award each year a limited number of competitive MD-PhD scholarships.
MD-PhD scholarships enable young physicians to complete a doctoral research training in natural sciences, public health sciences, clinical research or biomedical ethics at a Swiss university.
Applicants should aim at becoming experts in translational medicine and at contributing to evidence-based medicine.
Duration: 24-36 months within a time window of four years starting from the date of matriculation as MD-PhD or PhD student (5 years in justified cases).
Earliest start: 1 September 2020.
Who can apply:
- Completed studies in human, veterinary or dental medicine at a Swiss University by the time the scholarship starts: medical degree obtained up to 3 years before the call deadline.
- Admitted as doctoral students in the MD-PhD program of the Medical Faculty of a Swiss university by the time the scholarship starts and for the duration of the scholarships.
- Dedicate at least 80% of their doctoral time to research.
- Residents of Switzerland for at least 24 months by the call deadline.
Eligible costs: salary of the grantee (CHF 55’044 per year) + 16% social charges.
Own contributions: the host institution guarantees funding to complete the doctorate after the expiration of the scholarship.
Deadline: 15 December (every year)
Applications must be submitted to the Local MD-PhD Commissions where you intend to be matriculated as doctoral student. These will pre-select applications to be recommended to the National Expert committee.
