Aim: The Decarbonization and Energy Virtual Institute (DEVI) is an initiative of Schmidt Sciences’ Climate Center to advance the methodological frontier of decarbonization modeling by addressing key knowledge gaps in complex interdependencies of decarbonization pathways, with an emphasis on yielding actionable insights for policy and technology deployment strategies. This sector-focused call solicits Expressions of Intent (EOIs) for modeling the decarbonization of urban mobility and the built environment, including relevant interdependencies such as land use, end-use electrification, and shared infrastructure, among others. The foundation seeks to fund one multi-institutional collaboration targeting coupled representation of mobility and buildings sectors, particularly in urban systems.
Funding & Duration: Up to $4M over 5 years
Eligibility: Consortiums of multiple institutions are encouraged, particularly including or led by researchers local to selected geographic contexts. Eligible institutions include universities, national labs, institutes, non-profits, and agencies (including government or government-funded, subject to legal requirements).
How to Apply: The first step is to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) via the Application Portal. EOIs should be brief (≤ 3 pages) and should consist of a project narrative, research plan, and description of the project team. EOIs will be anonymized (removing names and references) for a blinded evaluation by a committee of advisors and Schmidt Sciences. All applicants will be notified of the status of their application by November 30. At that point, select teams will be invited to write a full proposal (8 pages) including more detail regarding budgets, project operations, timelines and team composition.
