Abstract
Instant messaging is more widespread than ever. At the same time, state surveillance and trade of personal data are
pervasive. This results in a plethora of communication solutions claiming to offer secure and privacy preserving messaging.
We analyze different challenges for secure and privacy preserving messaging and we present an in-depth discussion of two real world
examples addressing these challenges: Alpenhorn and the Signal protocol. We also propose directions for future work aimed
at improving the current messaging solutions.
