Abstract
Instant messaging is more widespread than ever. At the same time, state surveillance and trade of personal data are
pervasive. This results in a plethora of communication solutions claiming to offer secure and privacy preserving messaging.
We analyze different challenges for secure and privacy preserving messaging and we present an in-depth discussion of two real world
examples addressing these challenges: Alpenhorn and the Signal protocol. We also propose directions for future work aimed
at improving the current messaging solutions.
Background papers
SoK: Secure Messaging, Unger, N., et al. IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy 2015.
Alpenhorn: Bootstrapping Secure Communication without Leaking Metadata, by Lazar, D., Zeldovich, N. OSDI 2016.
A Formal Security Analysis of the Signal Messaging, by Cohn-Gordon, K., et al. Protocol. IEEE European Symposium on Security and Privacy 2017
