Traditionally properties of materials have been improved via microstructual design aimed to slow down the damage developement under load or use and the development of zero-defect production technologies. Hence, all our development work is based on the Damage Prevention paradigm. Nature, in constrast, seeems to have optimised materials via the Damage Management concept : i.e. the occurrence of damage during use is taken as unavoidable and to compensate for this damage the materials have built in healing mechanisms.
In this talk some of the novel routes to self healing in a range of modern engineering materials, such as polymers, composites, metals, asphalt, ceramics and concrete will be presented. Each of the routes respects the character of the matrix material to be modified. Some potential applications are also presented.
