Fast flashes of light are used to capture an image of a moving object. Similarly, a sufficiently short laser pulse can be used to probe matter on the microscopic level. The synthesis and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses enabled the investigation of the fundamental processes in matter occurring even on attosecond time scale. A theoretical challenge in this context is to provide simple, yet precise, description of the ionization process in atoms and molecules in terms of rate, timing and geometry, including the multi-electron effects. To do that, it is convenient to use semiclassical models. I will discuss the semiclassical model used for interpretation of recent ultrafast experiments and then I will consider the region of its validity.
