"Opportunity Recognition Among Scientists"
Abstract
We address the question of how context affects whether and how scientists recognize commercialization opportunities. In recognizing opportunities, research scientists must bridge the gap between the world of scientific discovery and the world of business and markets. Our model analyzes how individuals’ social context, specifically the institutional context, geographic region and personal networks affect perceptions of potential gain and controllability, which in turn lead to recognition of commercialization opportunities. Our theoretical model draws on entrepreneurship and managerial cognition research, and research on entrepreneurial context, including institutional and social networks perspectives. The model has implications for research in opportunity recognition, particularly in the research science context, and for policies designed to increase entrepreneurial behavior.
